Techcombank and VPBank, two prominent joint-stock banks, have surged ahead of the Big Four in terms of equity capital.
Top banks with the highest equity capital
Based on data from the Q2 2024 financial reports and semi-annual statements of 30 banks, the combined equity capital of these institutions reached VND 1.5 quadrillion, marking an 8% increase year-on-year.
Leading the pack, Vietcombank holds the highest equity capital, standing at VND 181.703 trillion by the end of Q2 2024, a 10% rise from the close of 2023. The bank also reported a stellar after-tax profit of VND 16.710 trillion in the first half of the year, significantly outperforming its peers.
Techcombank, the second-highest in both equity capital and profitability, reported VND 138.522 trillion in equity capital—a 5% growth from the beginning of the year. Despite recording VND 12.547 trillion in profits for the first half of the year, the bank allocated VND 5.284 trillion for cash dividends to shareholders.
VPBank ranks third, with equity capital amounting to VND 138.067 trillion, a slight 1% decrease from the end of last year. The bank distributed VND 7.934 trillion in cash dividends during Q2 2024, while its after-tax profit for the first half of the year was VND 6.775 trillion.
VietinBank and BIDV occupy the fourth and fifth positions, with equity capital of VND 135.973 trillion and VND 134.700 trillion, respectively, both showing solid growth of 8% and 10% compared to the end of 2023. Agribank comes in sixth, with equity capital at VND 117.074 trillion, reflecting a robust 16% increase since the end of last year, bolstered by an additional VND 10.347 trillion in capital during the first half of 2024.
The Top 10 also features banks such as MB, ACB, SHB, and HDBank. Notably, MB is among the seven banks with equity capital exceeding VND 100 trillion.
Vietbank leads in terms of growth rate, with an 18% increase in equity capital during the first half of the year, followed by Agribank at 16%. In terms of absolute growth, Vietcombank tops the list, adding VND 16.690 trillion to its equity capital since the beginning of the year, with Agribank close behind, increasing by VND 16.538 trillion.
Only three banks reported a decline in equity capital compared to the start of the year: VPBank (due to dividend payouts), ABBank, and BaoViet Bank (attributed to exchange rate fluctuations and fund allocations).
