Top 10 banks with the highest EPS in 2023
Vietcombank continues to lead the banking industry in terms of earnings per share (EPS) thanks to outstanding profit after tax. The next positions belong to Techcombank, ACB, Sacombank and MB respectively.

Vietcombank maintaining its position

According to data from 27 listed banks, the average earnings per share (EPS) of the last 4 quarters of the industry reached 2,264 VND at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023, down 12% compared to the end of 2022. Profit after tax of listed banks only increased by 4% in 2023 and the issuance of additional shares to increase capital has pulled EPS down.

In particular, Vietcombank continues to maintain its leading position with EPS in the last 4 quarters reaching 5,910 VND, down 6% compared to the end of 2022. According to the fourth quarter 2023 financial report, this bank recorded a full-year profit after tax of nearly 33,100 billion VND, an increase of 10.5% over the same period.

Compared to the results at the end of the third quarter, Vietcombank's EPS decreased by 16.8%. In 2023, Vietcombank issued 857 million shares to pay dividends to shareholders (equivalent to 18.1%).

Techcombank continued to maintain the runner-up position with EPS reaching 5,111 VND, down 11% compared to the end of 2022 but there was an improvement compared to the results at the end of the third quarter. For the whole year of 2023, Techcombank's profit reached VND 18,191 billion, down 11% over the same period.

ACB ranked third on the list with the most recent 12-month EPS reaching 4,131 VND at the end of the fourth quarter, an increase of 2%. In 2023, ACB recorded profit after tax of VND 16,045 billion, an increase of 17% compared to 2022.

The remaining banks in the top 10 with the highest EPS are Sacombank, MB, BIDV, VietinBank, HDBank, VIB and Nam A Bank respectively.

Compared to the end of the third quarter, the rankings of banks had a significant disturbance when Sacombank, HDBank and Nam A Bank improved their rankings, while TPBank dropped out of the top 10. The three banks including Sacombank, HDBank and Nam A Banks all recorded strong profit growth for the whole year 2023.

Sacombank is also the bank with the fastest growing EPS, 53% higher than the beginning of the year. This bank's profit after tax for the whole year 2023 increased by 53%, reaching 7,719 billion VND and is the highest in the banking industry.

Meanwhile, ABBank and BVBank (Ban Viet) saw EPS drop the deepest, at 70% and 89% respectively after a year of poor business. In addition, NCB is the only listed bank to report negative EPS in 2023.
