It is estimated that in November 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value continued to decrease compared to the previous month, down by 3.8%, reaching 500 million USD, but still increasing by 34.3% compared to the same period last year. The decline was partly due to a reduction in durian exports, mainly because the durian harvest season in the Central Highlands ended, and the harvest season in the Mekong Delta and Southeast region was off-season.

However, for the first 11 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports still achieved an impressive figure, estimated at 6.66 billion USD, up 28.2% compared to last year. The remarkable growth in producing key fruit varieties, combined with the effective exploitation of the Chinese market, has helped Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports achieve significant accomplishments in recent times.

Major export markets for Vietnam's fruits and vegetables

In October 2024, some traditional and potential markets decreased, including China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Australia. Conversely, fruit and vegetable exports to the US, South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, UAE, and Russia increased.

For the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value to most significant markets grew positively. Data from the General Department of Customs shows that in October 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value to China reached 308.46 million USD, down by 56.4% compared to September 2024 and down by 29.0% compared to October 2023. However, for the total 10 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value to China increased by 28.7% compared to the same period last year, reaching approximately 4.1 billion USD. The share of Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports accounted for 66.52% of the total export value in the first 10 months of 2024, higher than the 66.06% share in the first 10 months of 2023.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value to the US in October 2024 increased by 19.7% compared to September 2024 and increased by 41.2% compared to October 2023, reaching 32.53 million USD. For the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value to the US increased by 35.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 286.79 million USD.

Similarly, in the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable sector also effectively exploited other potential markets such as South Korea (up 40.8%), Thailand (up 70.4%), Japan (up 13.1%), Taiwan (up 9.2%), Australia (up 27.9%), UAE (up 31.7%), Russia (up 32.9%), Canada (up 44.8%), Germany (up 73.6%), etc. However, the growth rate of fruit and vegetable exports to some markets in October 2024 decreased compared to September 2024, including Thailand, Taiwan, and Australia.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export value in October 2024 decreased by 43.3% compared to September 2024 and decreased by 14.6% compared to October 2023, reaching 519.8 million USD. However, for the first 10 months of 2024, the country's fruit and vegetable export value reached 6.16 billion USD, up 27.8% compared to last year.

Durian contributed significantly to the sector's overall growth, accounting for 49.86% of the total export value of fruits and vegetables.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam has 5,840 fruit-growing regions that have been granted export codes by importing countries, of which 2,350 areas have been granted export codes to China, accounting for 40.2% of the total.

Currently, 12 types of Vietnamese fruits have been officially exported to this market, among those are durian, jackfruit, dragon fruit, banana, mango, longan, lychee, watermelon, rambutan, mangosteen, and passion fruit.  Sweet potatoes are also exported. Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export revenue in 2023 reached 5.6 billion USD, of which China accounted for 3.63 billion, making up nearly 65% of Vietnam's total fruit export value.

In 2024, it is estimated that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export revenue will be about 7.5 billion USD, with China alone expected to reach over 5 billion, accounting for approximately 70% of the volume.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary general of the Vietnam Fruits & Vegetable Association, Chinese consumers are increasingly interested in clean, safe agricultural products of natural origin at reasonable prices. This is also the strength of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. Many types of Vietnamese fruits, such as durian, dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit, mango, passion fruit, and lychee, are well-known and favored by Chinese consumers for their delicious taste and quality, comparable to those from surrounding countries.
